The Future of Aviation Begins with History
The Museum of Domodedovo International Airport organized an on-site exhibition in the main park of Domodedovo town. The exhibition was career-orientated and invited children and their parents to embark on a journey through the decades.
The history of Domodedovo Airport was presented through a photographic chronicle, from the initial construction of the airport and the first cranes on the site to the present day. Copies of orders and decrees from the 1950s and 1960s allowed visitors to witness the establishment of the airport's foundations and the decisions that shaped its development.
The exhibition was enriched with rare items, including felt boots, an abacus, and the briefcase of Mikhail Meshcheryakov, the first director of the airfield complex.
The exhibition was complemented by official photo albums from different years, showcasing important milestones in the airport's history, including photographs of the legendary Il-62 jet airliner, which began regular flights from Domodedovo in 1967. The Il-62 was a flagship aircraft of the Soviet aviation industry. It was the airliner capable of flying long distances (Moscow-Havana) with technical landings. Before Il-62, Tu-114 turboprop was the airplane used for long-distance hauls. At the exhibition, you could see pictures of the two-deck A-380 (Airbus). Domodedovo is the only airport in Russia that regularly receives several flights from the A-380.
In the USSR, Domodedovo was an airport where the achievements of the Soviet aviation industry were actively used. Since November 1, 1977, the airport has been serving regular passenger flights on TU-144, a Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau. This aircraft was the world's first commercial supersonic passenger aircraft. The exhibition showcased photographs of the first TU-144 flight.
Historical materials presented by Domodedovo Civil Aviation Production Association and Domodedovo Aviation and Technical Base, responsible for aircraft maintenance and repair, also captivated visitors. Memos, instructions, souvenirs, and awards showed how diverse the professions in the field are.
Visitors were interested in the drawings of airport employees' children, a collection that was collected over several years by the museum's curator, Irina Kasyanova. Notably, the grown-up authors of these works were among the guests.
In total, more than 300 exhibits were presented at the exhibition. The event was not only informative but also practical as the organizers received several requests for career guidance tours for schoolchildren at the airport during the spring and summer seasons of 2026.
